McKinley is a model railway on an epic scale, but there is far more to the story than that. Most of all, visiting and operating McKinley is an epic experience.

The layout has been 25 years in the making, and during that time owner David Townend and his team have gone to enormous lengths to build a railway which not only looks and sounds highly realistic, but also works with an incredible degree of reliability.

This in turn makes operations sessions highly enjoyable as the trains run over McKinley’s 4,000 feet of track without stuttering on points or becoming stuck underground.

Operators get to work in station areas in a very cooperative way as they solve the many puzzles generated by McKinley’s high traffic flows and the demands of a rigorous timetable. This is a very busy railway.

And if you visit make sure you take time to soak up the visual and auditory atmosphere. Enjoy the tremendous attention to detail which has gone into every scene, whether that be the stations and structures, or the extensive rolling stock upgrades. Locomotives have been carefully weathered to match their historical prototypes, and sound has been added and finely tuned for a perfect visitor experience. Carriages have been heavily modified and now include realistic lighting and, of course, passengers.
