Birmingham Broadway shares the blue / black mainline with Manchester Park Street, and is the third station on the original McKinley layout.

But, unlike, London and Manchester, Birmingham is a through station which presents unique challenges to its operation crews. The station has four passenger platforms, two with bi-directional running, and a junction at the north end of the station for trains crossing over to the red / green mainline via the McKinley Road branch.

Behind Broadway are the goods tracks, with dedicated freight for the station’s granary and tin shop. There is also loco stabling. Birmingham Broadway is a BUSY station with a continuous stream and stopping and through services. The station manager and his assistant must keep up with the timetable lest the consequences be felt across the network!
